Fresh back from Segwaying the frontier for photo frames

Yes I admit it, I got up bright and early as usual, took my pills and slept in until 8am and then got up to go make the rounds looking for mythical $99 TouchPad’s. I did Staples, I did Sears, I did Officemax, I did RadioShack and I finished up the morning at OfficeDepot.

At each location I met staff that winced when I asked about the TouchPad’s “All sold out”. Yes, today is going to be a hellish day as folks keep calling and dropping by looking for a $99 photo frame.

I lingered at OfficeDepot and thus they got me with what is going to go down and one of the best loss leader sales of American Corporate history. HP is picking up the tab for the 4 or 5 tabs each store had in stock and those cheap tabs are going to lure in customers all day long with people wondering “Hey, I wonder if anyone tried this store?”

In my case I’ve been looking to upgrade my home printer situation so I wondered through the HP printer aisle. I found the printer I wanted but alas OfficeDepot had it on “delivery only”. Darn!

I wondered over to the paper area and found BOGO on HP 80lb advanced photo paper in all the sizes. Well gosh darn I did get a heck of a HP deal after all.

I also scored a Googlerola In Car Hands Free kit for 20 cents on the dollar in the clearance aisle. I’ll be giving that to a friend as a gift not mounting it on the Segway. Although maybe I should mount it on the Segway? Hmmm!

Best Buy has extended the return period to 60 days on the TouchPad. I figure I give them a couple more days and they may turn that into a 60 day price match and let me keep the one I got there for $99. Either way I’ve got a discount coming.

Now its up to Amazon to see what they’re going to do. Return? Price Match? I hope they do something as my ass is still stinging over the way they handled the TouchPad pre-order.

By the way? The iPad 2 went with me and I used it for real time updates during my morning sojourn. Weather was fantastic and I had on my shorts and short sleeves and let my long hair stream behind me in the breeze at 12.5 MPH! :-)

UPDATE: HP has apparently done as I hoped. If you bought directly from HP you should now call them and they will offer you a full refund or let you keep your unit for the firesale price (with $10 thrown in for sales tax difference). They have apparently also directed their retail channel partners to offer the same terms to their customers. So in a couple days I should be able to contact Best Buy and Amazon and get some $$$ back.

At $99 they’ll make decent photo frames so I’ll probably opt to keep both of them and load photos on them and position them around the home. One of my better obsolete hardware resolutions. :-)

The Great Deadski

We had the soft launch. We had the hard launch. We finally got nearly solid software. And now it’s dead. All on a two week, two week and two week schedule. Six weeks of experimentation by HP.

I applaud HP for stepping up and protecting their share holders by not continuing to pour cash down a rat hole. Now I hope they protect their customers and offer HP TouchPad owners deals on HP products.

I’ll take a nice discount on an HP Color Laser Jet with ePrint support. :-)

What does this mean for Dirty Pad? Well I still have in my hands the most powerful tablet in existence, now it’s an Apple iPad 2. In the coming days you’ll see the effect this has on the blog.

TouchPad as an Instamatic Camera

I had bought the Camera application for the touchpad as a joke app to clown around with friends and strangers. To use it you had to basically face away from the scene you wished to record and then aim the web camera over your shoulder using the touchpad’s screen to aim/frame/compose your shot. Then when you were happy with the image you would touch the on screen shutter button to record the image.

Today though the update mechanism coughed up an update to the app that lets you use the volume keys as the shutter release. Using this involves aiming the screen of the touchpad at your subject and then pressing one of the volume keys with your index finger. How do you aim it? Well so far you need the cooperation of your subject.

I tried it out on Cleo and she thought it was fantastic. You could tell when you were aimed correctly because she became intensely focused on the “other cat” you were showing her.

Picture quality is roughly the same as I got from Kodak 126 film and an instamatic camera back in the 70’s.

The Big Redoski Part Trois

First we had the soft launch.

Then we had the hard launch.

Now I guess we have the holy shit these things really aren’t selling launch.

I haven’t seen any sales figures for the HP TouchPad but I think it’s pretty clear from the extreme across the board discounting this weekend that things are not going well.

Now in addition to my discontent over what a poor device HP sold to me I can now add discontent over the device not even being 30 days old and now being discounted by close to 20% in places.

Plus I think it’s pretty clear that the promised stabilization update isn’t going to make it by the end of July either.

But wait, then we have the leaked photos of the Fat Pad, with a rumor that it will be released by at&t next month.

My question for HP.

Since you’ve now clearly realized that the HP TouchPad isn’t selling do you really think it isn’t selling due to a lack of FLASH storage and at&t HSPA radio? Are you really going to launch the Kin of Tablets only to have to yank it off the shelves or heavily discount it by Labor Day?

The Pre 3 at least can be used as a phone. The HP TouchPad pretty much winds up being a desk clock, a very expensive desk clock.

Dirty Pad and I watch Forbidden Planet on the bus to work

Yes, it’s true: the HP MovieStore is finally here. I eagerly ripped the wrapping off this morning right after I rolled out of bed and found Forbidden Planet waiting inside. I purchased it and then eagerly waited for it to download.

Five minutes later I realized that despite my 50Mbps Comcast and the early 5:15am hour it was going to take nearly an hour to download. I leave for work at 6:15 so this was going to be tight.

Sure enough, 6:11 am it finished downloading just in time for me to leave for the bus.

The WebOS platform’s issues with web download performance seem to be alive on the HP TouchPad. :-(

For comparison, Forbidden Planet downloaded to the iPad 2 from the Apple store in 15 minutes.

Roxio got their hands on a very clean print and did a good job on the transfer. Amazingly Dirty Pad didn’t stutter or stammer once during playback. Which gives me hope that HP can release an improved Music Player.

What more can I say? I paid $10 to have Forbidden Planet on the most powerful Tablet in existence and unlike the iPad 2 I can’t plug in  my big screen. But I can hold the 9.7″ screen really close and ignore the lack of color saturation and contrast. HP claimed they bought an IPS screen but they must have gotten the screens Apple didn’t want because the blacks are not iPad black.

It effectively killed the ride to and from work today so today was a good day with Dirty Pad.

The Big Redoski Part Deux

Today wasn’t just a Redoski for HP’s TouchPad.

The G-Slate is off in the corner weeping quietly, it’s SIM card has been taken from it because it couldn’t really do 4G and it’s ego is crushed.

The T-Mobile Flagship store no longer carries slates: any slates, from anyone.

Dirty Pad is chortling about Slate’s fall from grace as he quietly slurps Kindle books into his freshly updated Kindle app. Yes, I got one Unicorn today.

Still no Sign of the HP Movie Store but the night is yet young. I got five other application updates today so it was fresh bits all over today for the HP TouchPad community.

The Mifi sucks milk from the Nook’s USB brick using the HP TouchPad’s USB cable to fill its battery’s belly for the first time.

And the Mifi was an IQ test.

So I can buy this for $79 on a 2 year contract?

Yes sir.

But $50 of that is a rebate, so I have to pay $129 today?

Yes sir.

Is that the same kind of update as the $100 I didn’t get for this Galaxy S 4G and this G-Slate?

Uh, you didn’t get those rebates?

OK, so no rebate then. But I can buy it with no contract for $149?

Uh, you should have gotten those rebates but yes, $149.

I’ll take the $149 model.

The HP TouchPad Kindle app is sluggish but then I have 1982 ebooks in  my online collection. Perhaps I have too many ebooks? Nah, the iPad 2, Kindles et all all handle it…

There were no sales people at the Staples nor the Office Depot. They each had one HP TouchPad out on demo with no one around. The demo app supplied by HP was less than impressive to me. It was easy to kill and get back to WebOS to check for the Kindle and HP Movie Store apps. Zilch.

Maybe they’ll get a memo to update the Kindle app and put some books into it.

And the final Redoski of the day: Borders is no more. I stopped by the downtown Seattle store as well this afternoon and while they wouldn’t admit it: they were all out of a job and you could see it in their eyes. The big blow out sales is expected to start Friday.

I really don’t know what I’d go there to buy on blow out, which I guess is part of why they’re on blow out sale eh? Discs, books, paper magazines: they’re all dead.

I hold in my hands the most powerful Tablet in existence… maybe tomorrow it will get Zinio. That would make tomorrow a good day.

The Big Redoski

I’m writing from the waiting area at the downtown Seattle Flagship store. It’s hard times for Slate. His inability to actually achieve 4G and Dirty Pads constant taunting of Sam Slade (resulting in needing to reboot him twice a day) has driven me to get a Mifi to establish high speed peace.

Which is my way of saying Honeycomb is worse to me than WebOS.

Hopefully Dirty Pad and the Mifi get along. In the short term I won’t be missing phone calls.

The Mifi is selling well here in Seattle. They were out and I sit here pounding in this post via iPad 2 and Sam Slade. T mobile is fetching one from up north. It is supposed to be here any minute.

While I waited I checked on the “Real Launch” today. Indeed every Staples store within 20 miles had 32GB units in stock. No 16Gb units.

All the Office Depots had limited stock of 16GB and 32GB units. Except the store closest to Microsoft, it had normal stock levels of the 32GB unit.

I drifted into a Staples and an Office Depot before coming back to T mobile.

Ah, the unit is here, waiting for sales person to free up, do I need a water? Love these guys!

The Office Depot was picked clean. They had one cover and one charger left.

The Staples was stocked with 32GB and all accessories.

Considering the Office Depot computer said that store had limited stock I’m not calling it and Apple style blow out.
